‘Wicked’ Flies Back to Jacksonville for a Limited Engagement

Broadway’s “biggest blockbuster” musical WICKED is returning to Jacksonville for a limited engagement next month at the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts.

WICKED tells the “untold story of the witches” of OZ, and offers a sort of prequel, and then alternative view to The Wizard of Oz.

America’s fascination with the land of Oz from the original film, based on L. Frank Baum’s literary classic, has been one of the primary reasons for WICKED’s worldwide success. With multiple productions worldwide, and a Broadway run that just passed 8 years, this is a show that is defining musical theatre for the 21st Century.

The actual storyline of WICKED is based on a novel of the same name by author Gregory Maguire. The show’s book (theatre speak for the dialogue and plotline you’re seeing unfold on stage) is written by Winnie Holzman; the score composed by Stephen Schwartz.

This is now the second time WICKED has played in Jacksonville. The second national touring company came to town in April 2009, and broke box office records, selling out in record time.

There are still seats available for next month’s performances, which run from January 4 through January 22.

Leading the cast next month will be Anne Brummel as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Tiffany Haas as Glinda. Standing by for Brummel will be Stephanie Torns, who joins the tour direct from the Broadway company on Tuesday.

To buy tickets, you can check out the Artist Series, who presents the touring productions for the area.
