Fletcher High Rolls Out The Welcome Mat
On Friday morning January 27 Fletcher High’s PTSA hosted its annual Welcome Breakfast, where it was all about making this year’s area 8th graders and their parents feel comfortable as they begin their high school journey, and showing them why Fletcher is, indeed, the Pride of the Beaches.
Prospective Fletcher students and parents from the public middle schools, St. Paul’s, and Beaches Chapel munched on donuts and juice while the coffee flowed freely as the Media Center’s tables and chairs filled with kids who’ll likely form friendships and make memories together as part of the class of 2016.
The PTSA President Douglas Malie welcomed the guests, then the affable Dennis Hester, Fletcher’s student instructional coach and director of the Cambridge AICE Program led the short program that included brief remarks from football coach Josh Corey, and athletic director Joe Reynolds.Dennis Hester told them that Fletcher is rated in the top 1% of high schools in the country as rated by Newsweek magazine. They heard all about the various curricula, freshman procedures, daily schedule, and how everyone can become part of the “Fletcher Family”.
Practical pointers were given about the dress code, who to go to for band-aids and such, and how the entire Fletcher community really is cohesive, supportive, and academically solid. The school offers the most Advanced Placement courses – second only to Stanton and Paxon – in the school district. There are electives for just about every interest, and a long list of extra-curricular activities that practically ensure that students will find something positive to explore during high school.
Fletcher principal Dane Gilbert welcomed the group via pre-recorded remarks because of a schedule conflict but was seen meeting and chatting with students in the hallway during the school tours.
The three young women pictured below, from right to left were group guides and are Sara Shapiro, a senior; Angelica Miller, 11th grade; and Colette Williams, 11th grade, and all are in the Interact Service Club. They led a group of students through the halls of the school for about 25 minutes and are shown here with two 8th graders from St. Paul’s Catholic School in Jacksonville Beach. All 8th grade students were assigned to Fletcher student guides who showed them what a real school day is like at Fletcher, answered questions, and were great at making even the most timid of students feel at ease about coming to Fletcher High School.
If you are an incoming freshman and missed this event – no worries! Fletcher will be holding a second Open House with Tours for area 8th graders on February 23 at 6:00pm.
