Thanksgiving at Pete’s Bar: 2011 Edition

First Street in front of Pete’s has been swept clean, and now all the shops at the beaches are in full-on holiday mode. Thanksgiving 2011 is history, but memories of the cocktail party at Pete’s Bar in Neptune Beach will carry us through until next year.     These guys skated over for some libations […]

Giving Thanks for Pete’s

Thanksgiving at the beach would not be complete without dropping in at Pete’s Bar in Neptune Beach.  Despite the many years of these Thanksgiving ‘pre-family dinner gathering-for-cocktails‘ get togethers, many beaches residents (or townies) have yet to experience a Thanksgiving at Pete’s.  If you haven’t, you should.  It’s tradition, y’all.   This tradition has morphed over the […]

Atlantic Beach’s Acoustic Night…

….may be over for the 2011 season, but we’ll be featuring some acoustic performances from The Beaches Online musical archives from time to time, to tide us over until next Spring when it begins again. Here’s a performance by Danny Dornan. A lovely performance; the videographer ought to have stood still rather than roaming the […]

An Old Park with a New Name

Mandalay Park was renamed over the weekend, following a sign unveiling ceremony at the park nestled between Seminole Road and Ocean Blvd. The park was re-designated as Waters Park, to honor the memory of former Atlantic Beach commissioner Dezmond Waters, who died earlier this year. Void of a sign previously, the City of Atlantic Beach […]

Tideviews Preserve at Sunset

Tideviews Preserve “officially” opened this weekend following a ribbon-cutting ceremony early Saturday morning.

As we first reported to you, the parking lot was full for the opening morning.

However, our return trip to view the sunset provided us an empty boardwalk for us to capture the magnificent setting sun.

Tideviews Preserve Opens to Sunny Weather, Crowd

Tide Views Preserve officially opened Saturday morning to a small crowd and sunny skies. The parking lot was full as visitors meandered through a coastal forest before emerging out into the wetlands that front the western flank of our beaches. The park features a lengthy boardwalk, upon which visitors can fish, take in the scenery […]

VOID Magazine’s Release Party This Friday

Have you seen VOID magazine?   It’s pretty much everywhere here at the beach, free to the public.  We’re longtime magazine lovers so when this new print magazine focussing on North Florida’s surf and skate culture premiered a year ago, it definitely caught our eye. A lot of our favorite magazines have disappeared  these past […]

The Last Acoustic Night of 2011

If it’s schmaltzy to say, “Thank goodness for Mike Shackelford,” then we accept the schmaltz.  We’re sentimental about living in a small, coastal town, where neighbors wander over to the park for an open-mic style Acoustic Night each month on a Sunday evening – May through October.  The city of Atlantic Beach sponsors the […]

Atlantic Beach Bake Sale Raises Money for Charity

Despite the breezy conditions, and temperature nosedive, Atlantic Beach residents still made it out to the bake-sale. Put on by teen Lily Greenwald, and her younger sister Maggie, the bake sale was to support the Jacksonville Cleft Lip & Palate Clinic. While the elder Lily is the young, budding chef in the family, Maggie takes […]

Protect Your Pumpkins!

Here in Florida, our carved pumpkins tend to have a short shelf life.  In other words, they rot quickly, so we don’t have much of a window to enjoy our carved, orange masterpieces. But wait!  There may be a way to extend the life of your jack-o-lantern! We read about this little trick on our iPhone’s […]
